What is MGNREGA ?
About MGNREGA – The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is a flagship social welfare program in India aimed at providing livelihood security in rural areas by guaranteeing 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. Punjab, a state in northern India, actively participates in the implementation of MGNREGA to address rural unemployment and poverty.
Implementation: MGNREGA is implemented by the Rural Development and Panchayat Department of the Government of Punjab. The department oversees the planning, execution, and monitoring of the program at the grassroots level.
Objectives: The primary objectives of MGNREGA in Punjab, as in the rest of India, include enhancing livelihood security in rural areas, creating durable assets, reducing distress migration, empowering women through increased participation in wage employment, and strengthening decentralized governance through the involvement of local self-government institutions.
Job Guarantee: MGNREGA guarantees 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every rural household whose adult members are willing to undertake unskilled manual work. The work provided under the program includes various activities related to water conservation, drought proofing, rural connectivity, and infrastructure development, among others.
Wage Rates: The wages for the work performed under MGNREGA are notified by the Government of Punjab and are linked to the prevailing minimum wages in the state. The payment of wages is made directly to the workers’ bank accounts within a stipulated time frame.
Asset Creation: One of the significant aspects of MGNREGA is asset creation in rural areas. In Punjab, the program focuses on creating durable assets such as rural roads, water conservation structures, ponds, check dams, and other infrastructure that contribute to the sustainable development of rural areas.
